SKIN INVESTIGATIONS IN ABU DHABI

An accurate skin diagnosis requires more than a visual assessment. Many conditions look similar on the surface — rosacea and lupus, eczema and psoriasis, fungal infection and contact dermatitis — and treating the wrong diagnosis not only fails but can worsen the underlying condition. Skin investigations provide the objective data that converts a clinical suspicion into a confirmed diagnosis. At House of Skincare on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, Dr. Khadija Al Zaabi, Consultant Dermatologist, orders and interprets skin investigations as an integrated part of patient assessment — not as an add-on service.

INVESTIGATIONS OFFERED

Dermoscopy: Non-invasive magnified examination of skin lesions using a handheld dermatoscope with polarised light. Essential for mole assessment, early detection of melanoma, and evaluation of inflammatory patterns in conditions like psoriasis and lichen planus. Dermoscopy increases diagnostic accuracy for melanoma detection by 35% compared to naked-eye examination alone.

Skin biopsy (punch, shave, or excisional): Removal of a small tissue sample for histopathological analysis. Used when the diagnosis cannot be confirmed clinically — inflammatory conditions with unusual presentations, suspicious pigmented lesions, persistent rashes that do not respond as expected.

Skin swabs (bacterial and fungal cultures): Swab taken from the affected area and sent for laboratory culture and sensitivity testing. Used for suspected skin infections where the organism needs to be identified and antibiotic or antifungal sensitivity determined before prescribing.

Wood’s lamp examination: UV light assessment for fungal infections of the scalp (tinea capitis), pityriasis versicolor, and certain pigmentation disorders. A simple, painless in-clinic test that provides immediate information.

Trichoscopy (scalp dermoscopy): Magnified assessment of the scalp and hair follicles. Used in the evaluation of hair loss conditions — distinguishes androgenetic alopecia from alopecia areata, scalp inflammation, and scarring alopecia at a follicular level without biopsy in most cases.

Patch testing and skin prick testing: See Allergy Testing page for full details.

WHEN ARE INVESTIGATIONS NEEDED?

Dr. Al Zaabi orders investigations based on clinical need — not routinely. If a lesion has features that require histological confirmation, if an infection needs culture-guided treatment, or if a scalp condition requires trichoscopic assessment before a diagnosis is possible, investigations are recommended and explained.
