PIERCING IN ABU DHABI
Piercing in Abu Dhabi
Ear piercing in Abu Dhabi at House of Skincare is performed in a clinical setting under the supervision of Dr. Khadija Al Zaabi, DOH-licensed Consultant Dermatologist, using single-use sterile equipment and hypoallergenic medical-grade jewellery. Whether you are having your earlobes pierced for the first time or adding a cartilage or nose piercing, the clinical environment at House of Skincare on Yas Island provides a level of safety and sterility that is not available at a jewellery counter or beauty salon.
Piercing performed outside a medical setting carries risks that are easily avoided with the right equipment and hygiene standards. Infection, allergic reaction to low-grade metals, keloid formation in susceptible individuals, and improper placement are the most common complications, and all are preventable with proper clinical technique and the right aftercare protocol. At House of Skincare, every piercing begins with an assessment of your skin, any history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring, and a discussion of placement to ensure the result is what you want.
Why House of Skincare for Piercing?
House of Skincare uses the Studex and Medisept touch-free sterile piercing systems, in which the jewellery is contained within a single-use, pre-sterilised disposable cartridge that never requires direct handling. The piercing instrument does not contact your skin. The cartridge is used once and discarded. This eliminates cross-contamination completely. All jewellery provided is medical-grade, hypoallergenic, and non-reactive. The clinic holds a 4.9-star patient rating and is DOH-licensed. If you develop any complication after piercing, including infection or unusual healing, the clinical team is immediately available for assessment and treatment.
Piercing Types Available at House of Skincare
Ear lobe piercing: The most common request. Earlobe tissue is vascular and heals well in 6 to 8 weeks with correct aftercare. Placement is assessed to ensure symmetry and appropriate positioning for your earlobe anatomy. The Studex system is used for lobe piercing, delivering the stud through a touch-free cartridge with no direct contact between the instrument and the skin.
Cartilage piercing: Helix, tragus, and other cartilage piercings are performed with the Studex system. Cartilage heals more slowly than lobe tissue, typically 3 to 6 months for initial healing and up to 12 months for full maturation. Cartilage piercings require more rigorous aftercare discipline than lobe piercings and are more prone to complications if the aftercare is not followed. Patients with a personal or family history of keloid scarring should discuss this at assessment before proceeding with cartilage piercing, as the cartilage site carries a higher keloid risk than the lobe.
Nose piercing (nostril): Nostril piercing is performed using the Medisept single-use sterile system. Placement is discussed at the appointment to ensure correct positioning at the natural curvature of the nostril. Healing time is 3 to 6 months. The initial jewellery is a fine, flat-back stud in medical-grade titanium or surgical steel. Hoops are not appropriate during the healing phase.
Navel (belly button) piercing: Navel piercing is performed with the Medisept navel instrument using individually sterilised jewellery and clamps. Navel piercings are the slowest to heal of all common piercing types, typically requiring 6 to 12 months for full healing. They are also the most sensitive to clothing friction and require consistent aftercare. Candidacy depends on navel anatomy. Patients with an inverted or flat navel structure are advised that healing complications are more common in these anatomical variants.
Jewellery Used at House of Skincare
Initial jewellery for all piercings is medical-grade and hypoallergenic. The options available are implant-grade titanium (ASTM F136), implant-grade surgical steel (ASTM F138), and 18-carat gold. Nickel-containing alloys are not used. Nickel allergy is the most common cause of piercing site reactions and is entirely avoidable with the correct initial jewellery selection.
After the initial healing period, you can change to other jewellery. Dr. Al Zaabi advises on when the piercing is sufficiently healed to change jewellery safely at your follow-up assessment. Changing jewellery too early is a common cause of prolonged healing and irritation. In patients with known metal allergies, the appropriate jewellery material is confirmed before any piercing proceeds.
Keloid Risk Assessment
Keloid and hypertrophic scar formation after piercing is more common in patients with darker Fitzpatrick skin tones and in patients with a personal or family history of keloid scarring. The ear cartilage, upper ear, and chest are the highest-risk sites. The earlobe is lower risk but not zero risk.
Dr. Al Zaabi assesses keloid risk at your consultation. Patients identified as high risk are counselled before any piercing proceeds, with a clear explanation of the likelihood of developing a keloid at the proposed site. Where the risk is significant, she discusses alternative approaches and, if a keloid does develop post-piercing, has the clinical expertise to manage it with intralesional corticosteroid injection and other treatments available at House of Skincare.
Aftercare Instructions
Clean the front and back of the piercing with sterile saline solution 2 to 3 times daily for the first 6 to 8 weeks for lobe piercings and for the full healing period for cartilage and nose piercings.
Turn the stud gently twice daily during the first 4 to 6 weeks to prevent the jewellery from adhering to the healing tissue.
Keep the piercing dry. Avoid prolonged water exposure in swimming pools, the sea, or hot tubs during the healing phase.
Do not apply perfume, hairspray, or skincare products directly onto or around the piercing.
Do not remove the initial jewellery until the piercing is fully healed. Premature jewellery removal allows the channel to close rapidly and risks trapping an infection.
If you notice increasing redness, warmth, swelling, or discharge after the first few days of normal post-piercing reaction, contact House of Skincare for assessment. Early infection is easily managed if treated promptly.
Alternative and Related Treatments
Skin Tag Removal: Patients who visit House of Skincare for piercing often ask about other small cosmetic skin concerns. Skin tags, warts, and moles are assessed and removed by Dr. Al Zaabi using electrocautery, cryotherapy, or surgical excision as appropriate. Multiple concerns can often be addressed in the same appointment. See the Mole and Skin Tag Removal page at House of Skincare.
Keloid Treatment: For patients who develop a keloid or hypertrophic scar at a previous piercing site, Dr. Al Zaabi treats these with intralesional corticosteroid injection, which reduces the bulk of the raised scar over a series of sessions. Silicone sheeting and pressure devices are recommended as adjuncts. Early treatment of a developing keloid produces significantly better results than waiting until the scar is fully established.
